Special Teams Book
Special Teams Book
Great book for all special team coordinators!
Special Teams are truly a huge part of the game. However, it rarely is given the time it deserves. Coaches may have no idea how to work with kicker/punters/holders, etc….
The goal of this workbook is to provide some ideas, but it is mainly designed for a coach to process all that will be required to have a great special teams group.
Most coaches learn they are working with a special team late in the off-season and must attempt to do the best they can. Use this book to help prepare for if/when that time may come in your career.
When building your special teams groupings, you must work through the different teams you must have prepared to go each week. From drills you can run, to personnel charts all the way to scouting the opposing team.
This workbook will give you a variety of exercises to complete to ensure that you’ve addressed all the major points that you need to think about to put your team in the best position to be as prepared as possible.
Here’s a few topics you’ll work through and the questions you’ll answer:
Personnel - Who are you able to use? Who do you need to highlight and hide? While an offensive and defensive depth chart may move throughout the season, it is almost a guarantee that special teams will constantly be shuffling players. Use these sections to try to be as prepared as you can.
Drills - We will provide a few drills and some examples, but I think the best special team units always have very effective and simple drills. Running special teams can be tough, so think of common drills to help build the skill and identify guys that can help on each team.
Diagraming your team - There are a ton of ways to run each team. We will provide one example of many, but you need to work through these sections as you look at what would benefit your team the most.
Scouting - Very few special teams actually scout the opponent effectively. If you are able to do this and communicate it to your players there is a chance to big plays each week. Use this section to track kicks, identify strengths and weaknesses and more on your opponent.
